Delaware Social Media Initiative: Rodney Jordan - Sir Galahad incarnate

Rodney Jordan - Sir Galahad incarnate

Last Friday evening many, many people from all walks came together to celebrate Rodney Jordan's birthday - and raise more than $500 for the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition.

During the celebration, I asked one of my typical birthday questions, "What's the most significant event for you this past year?"

Rodney's response: "This night, having all of these people here, this community."

Wow.

I believe that tells you exactly what kind of person Rodney is - he is all about the community - at our roundtable, Rodney jordan is Sir Galahad - pure of heart and ever galant (fyi, I'm labeling myself as the town crier in this little analogy).

Here's the thing, I don't know if many people really know just how much Rodney does - from organizing events to putting people and organizations together to supporting hundreds of people in the area - Rodney was the first person to step up to lead the Community Matters Networking Group, Rodney put together (and primarily funded) the first Social Media Train in Delaware - oh yea, and for anyone who has benefitted from using the hashtag #netde, yea, Rodney started that.

It is safe to say that most people in our community owe a debt of gratitude to Rodney - I know I do.

And when I look at how much he has done in just the last couple of years I've known him, I can't wait to see how much will be accomplished in the coming years!

Rodney Jordan, truly deserving of the Dream, Believe, Dare and Do award if there ever was one.

Chick-Fil-A Leadercast, Leadership Conference comes to #Delaware May 6, 2011 Find out more... #NetDe #SussexDe

What is Leadercast:

The Chick-fil-A Leadercast began like most great ideas do: with an innovative leader and a simple vision.

That leader is John C. Maxwell, and his vision was to create a different kind of leadership conference. One that was affordable and open to leaders from every background. One that gave individuals and organizations the chance to gather in their own communities, build relationships with each other and grow as leaders.

In 2009, GiANT Impact began partnering with Chick-fil-A to develop leaders. Yes, Chick-fil-A is a quick-service chicken restaurant chain, and most customers are more familiar with their great food and customer service than they are with the company's leadership legacy. What many don't know is that Chick-fil-A credits its success to its core values and its focus on developing leaders. Chick-fil-A is passionate about supporting organizations' and individuals' efforts to grow their leadership potential.

The milestone partnership with Chick-fil-A prompted GiANT Impact to look to the future with even bigger dreams and a few other exciting changes, which included the name Leadercast.

Leadercast represents the growth of this leadership event and communicates GiANT's responsibility to help you cast a vision of leadership in your organization and your community. Leadercast also supports John Maxwell's original vision of developing leaders by partnering with fellow leadership organizations, host locations and attendees. Chick-fil-A is now one of the key organizations helping GiANT Impact live out John's vision.

Leadercast Comes to Delaware:

The Chick-Fil-A leadercast Conference takes place in Atlanta, Georgia, but by way of a LIVE Simulcast arrangement, you can attend the Leadercast conference through a host location.  This year, Laurel Wesleyan Church in Laurel Delaware is proud to host this year's Leadercast Live Simulcast.  Tickets for this event normally sell for $145.00, but Laurel Wesleyan Church is able to provide tickets at a greatly discounted rate.  Your ticket includes the Leadercast Bound Notebook and Lunch during the event.

#ChooseYourPassion #NetDe Please support 23rd & 5th Small Giving Campaign

Small Giving Campaign

This winter we're creating our own stories by giving all our clients $10 to donate to charity of their choice and recording the results. We've asked a group of local Charities to share their stories, and how small donations make a difference. Interested?

Take a look, hear the stories.

This is truly a Dream, Believe, Dare and Do story. But more than that, this is a story about Passion. You don't have to be the leader, you don't have to do a lot, or even give a lot. But if you have a passion about a cause, group or organization, every little thing you can do goes a long way.

So get off your butt and Do Something ! The folks at 23rd & fifth have given you nine examples of where you can help. Choose one of these or choose your own.

Parents, I urge you to get your kids involved as well. Help them Do Something outside of themselves and get involved. Kids and teens under 25 years old can join Do Something: http://www.dosomething.org/ and explore their passion.

I am challenging everyone in the #NetDe twitterverse to join with 23rd & fifth and the Small Giving Campaign and find out what you can do to make a difference. Whether it's a small donation of your resources or time. Every little bit goes a long way.

Jailhouse Rock MDA Spooktacular Tweetup #NetDe #SussexDe #DelTweet

OK, so your getting tired of being asked to donate for this cause and that cause.  Well here is another cause I'd like to ask you to help out with.  The MDA (Muscular Dystrophy Association).  Yes Jerry's Kids !

So when I was asked to participate in the Dewey / Rehoboth MDA Spooktacular Lockup I thought, WOW what a great Dream, Believe, Dare and Do opportunity.

The MDA not only helps Kids and Families with Muscular Dystrophy, but also does research on a whole host of Neuromuscular, Peripheral Nerve, Motor Neuron, Metabolic and Inflammatory Myopathies like Polymyositis which is what I have.  Not to mention ALS research.

So WOW, the MDA is involved in a whole lot more than just diseases know as Muscular Dystrophy.  No doubt you may know someone who is affected by one of these diseases.

It takes a lot of money to do this kind of research and to help out the families who have kids or adults affected by these diseases.

SO how can you help ?

Well on October 27th. I'm being locked up along with many other business people from the Dewey and Rehoboth Beach area.  We need to raise bail money to get released.  Our individual goal is $3,000 per person.

In addition I am asking you, my Twitter and Facebook friends to help out by participating in the Jailhouse Rock Spooktacular Tweetup on Thursday October 21st.

The event is being held at Dogfish Head Brewings and Eats in Downtown Rehoboth from 6:00pm until 8:00pm.  Dogfish Head has been gracious enough to host this event and donate the room fees to the MDA.  I'm excited to be able to put together this event and I'm counting on YOU to help make it a success for the MDA.

Tickets are FREE but limited to 100 and you only have until October 14th. to get them.  So please go to the  Jailhouse Rock Eventbrite site and get your tickets today.

If you can't make the event, you can DONATE now.

Jerry Lewis Open

Thanks for your help !

Just when you thought you had it bad ..... To someone I don't know, but I care about #NetDe

Just when you thought you had it bad, someone else can always top it with their story or experience.  This is not about that, what it is about is learning.  Learning from someone else's experience, how they handled it or didn't and what YOU can walk away with and apply to your life.

This story is about me and it's meant for someone I don't know except for on twitter, have never met, but I care a lot about.  Why ?  Because this person could be you.  So excuse me while I forgo the usual #FollowFriday Frenzy on twitter and take a moment to share.

Dear Friend;

Dream, Believe, Dare and Do is not just some cutesy Disney phase I picked up, it's a daily walk.  A way of being and a means by which I get through a day, week, and year.  And it also works well as a business practice.  So I share with you something I haven't  and may only have alluded to so that you may learn from it and hopefully share it with someone else you may know.

While listening on twitter I pickup on words, and things people say and how they say them that indicates their mood and how they are feeling about themselves.  On a particular day, I was alarmed by what you said, and it indicated deep depression and pain.  I wanted to Yell "Don't Jump !  It's not worth it."  But I see your OK and you have enlightened me about your pain.

Yes physical and mental pain. Not to make light of it, but been there done that and still doing it.  I have an autoimmune disease call Polymyositis, where the body attacks the muscles.  Much like Arthritis where the body attacks the joints.  Not only do I have Polymyositis but also Dermatomyositis which causes a rash from time to time on my face and neck and affects the skin.  Top that with Fibromyalgia and I'm just one big ball of pain and nerves.  It took two years to get a final diagnosis, but thanks to a great rheumatologist in Lewes and the great people at Johns Hopkins where they now have a whole clinic devoted to myositis, I am getting treatment.

At first diagnosis I was told that it would be five years and I would be in a wheel chair.  I was walking with the help of a cain at that point.  I started treatment with mass doses of prednisone and a chemo therapy drug call methotrexate to stop my immune system from attacking my muscles.  It would help for a while, but I would have relapses and things would get worse.  I found out that me and prednisone did not get along and my poor wife had to deal with periods of anger and depression.  So I took depression drugs, that didn't help.  At one point I even left home for 6 months.  I had to stop the prednisone as it was affecting not only my mood but my liver.  So that caused a flare up and I had to go on pain medication and an increase in the chemo, which I took by mouth and at the doses I took literally burned by stomach and digestive tract.

You name it, I've been on every pain medication there is.  I finally settled on Oxycodone.  I Took Lyrica, and a muscle relaxer to keep from having muscle spasms and various sleep medications, so I could sleep as well as various mind numbing, mood bending drugs to keep me sane.  I was a zombie !

Was I addicted ? Probably.  Was I dependent ?  For sure.  It had been five years since I was diagnosed and I decided I want to go to Disney World, and take my boys who were 20 and 18 at the time.  This would probably be my last big trip.  I was having difficulty getting around.  On top of that, I had recently started taking a higher dose of Chemo and had to convert to self inflicted injections weekly.  I lost my hair, got fat and looked like a weeble.  I made it through Disney World with a cane and one of those motor scooters.

Somewhere along the way I discovered the MOUSE.  Yeah Mickey Mouse.  I became obsessed with With Disney and the Dream Believe Dare and Do Credo of Walt Disney which says "I dream, I test my dreams against my beliefs, I dare to take risks, and I execute my vision to make those dreams come true."  With the grace of God I had a moment of clarity.  While DBDD was mainly meant for business, I found I could apply it to my personal life.

By now I was sick of being in pain, sick of being numb and sick of being sick.  I had chronic bronchitis and had bouts of pneuomonia at least once a month (the lack of an immune system plus the disease attacks the lungs).

I had a dream, that I was not going to be in a wheel chair, I was going to get up, dust myself off and make the best of the rest of my life.  I tested my dreams against my beliefs.  I am a Christian, I am a junkie, these two do not walk hand in hand with each other.  I dared to take a risk and make a change.  I went to my doctor and said I want to stop this madness.  What can I do ?  He advised what I should and should not do and how it might impact my health.  So I went on to DO.  I stopped all the pain meds,  cold turkey and it went surprisingly well.  I decided that I'd rather feel the pain and know I'm still alive than to walk around like a zombie and not be sure I was alive.  I lost 50 lbs, changed my way of eating and now that I could, changed my way of thinking.

I have found that the brain has an amazing way of dealing with pain if you just train yourself to use it.  I try to exercise as much as my body will let me...I can easily pull muscles because they are week.  I rest as much as I can.  I'm a work-a-holic, and a stress junkie,  so my wife has to help me out in this area.  I leaned my limitations and still push the envelope as often as I can get away with.  But most of all I am ME again !  No cain, no wheelchair, no pain drugs.

I have learned to love myself with my limitations and enjoy every day as much as possible. Thank you Jesus for that moment of clarity.  I have since cut back from 10 different dugs a day to just 5 a day, 3 blood pressure medication (the disease affects the heart and blood vessels over time)  A muscle relaxer to keep the spasms to a minimum and Klonopin which reduces the shaking (but I only take these before bed time).  Oh and yes I still take the Chemo, self inflicted once a week.

So my point in this letter to you my friend is this, Don't give up hope, when you do that the drugs become your only hope.  Get help managing your pain without drugs.  You know the mind is a terrible thing to waste, use it !  You can teach it to manage your pain. Get good help with your physical problem.  Learn your limitations, make plans and goals for the future and then GO DO.  Talk to someone if that helps.  There is always someone who is worse off that you are, helping them helps make you better.  Learn to love yourself and then you can love others.

So now you know the rest of the story.  I hope there is someone out there this may help.  Share it with them.  Social Media is a great tool to use to do this.

Remember, it all started with a mouse.

Your Friend,

David

The #Delaware #Poken is here ! #NetDe #DePoken ... PLS RT->

OK Delaware, the Delaware Poken is here !

Thanks to Micky Jones of Poken Philly, we have a first and hopefully final draft of the "Delaware Poken"

So What is a POKEN ?

A poken is a small USB social networking gadget that allows you to store your social networking (Facebook.com, twitter for example) profiles and share them with other Poken users by touching Pokens.

Why would I use a Poken?
Why write down URLs, scribble e-mail addresses, memorize phone numbers and trade business cards when you can quickly, easily and effortlessly trade profiles with new business contacts and friends?

Get more info on Pokens at Poken Philly

How does a Poken Work ?

Open an account at http://www.doyoupoken.com.

Attach the Poken to your keychain or keep it in your pocket or purse.

When you meet people in the Real World, put your Pokens together, and they share your Facebook, Twitter and other social network data.

Get the full scoop on POKENS at http://www.poken.com/

So here it is, the Delaware Poken:
Delaware-blue-hen-poken
Please note the purple circle will not appear on the actual Poken.

Who wants a Delaware Poken ?
Do you like the design ?

Please leave you comments here.  if you would be interested in having a Delaware Poken, let me know or send a TWEET with #DePoken.
Please note if there is not enough interest, it won't happen.  I need at least 100 interested people for the Delaware Poken to become reality.
Give me your comments or let me know if you are interested.

#SocialMedia 101 training needed in western #SussexDe Calling all #DE tweeps for help #NetDe

It has come to my attention that a number of Western Sussex Small businesses are looking for guidance and training in the area of Social Network Media.  It seems that the most are looking to War Wic Tech in Salisbury for this type of training.  But local follow up and support is non-existant.

While there is a lot of training and support in Northern Delaware, as well as Eastern Sussex, it seems that western Sussex County is out of the loop.

Therefore I am calling on all or any Delaware Social Media Pros "geeks" who would be interested in helping out in this area.  Lets bring ALL of Delaware closer to being number one in the area of Social Network Media.

I am looking to bring the Social Network Media Train to Western Sussex County.  Lets get these people incorporated into Delaware's Social Media Network.  We need a source for these small businesses to go to for training and support.

My job...I will get the word out, make the contacts and locate a venue.  I need your help to put together a panel of Social Media "Pros" from Delaware to present and support.

If your on board with this idea, and would like to be a part of this Dream, Believe, Dare and Do opportunity, please contact me via twitter or by email at sdehappyhour@comcast.net and we will start planning this event.

Thanks in advance for your help Delaware.
